Marianne Vos of the Netherlands has won gold at the world track cycling championships in Apeldoorn.

Katherine Bates of Australia finished second in the 10km event, with Britain's Danielle King claiming the bronze medal. The scratch is not one of the five Olympic track disciplines.

For much of the race Vos trailed the lead pack by some hundred metres. But half a lap before the finish, she launched a fierce attack, ending several bicycle lengths ahead of nearest pursuer. cl
