Dutch traffic slow but not chaotic

Although this morning’s traffic has been moving slower than usual, the severe winter weather has not caused the widespread road chaos that had been feared.

Accidents caused by the adverse conditions have, however, led to a number of traffic jams. The southeast of the country saw more snow through the night and a reduced number of lanes are in use on some local motorways.

Dutch Rail NS has introduced a special timetable, with fewer trains running between the major cities in the centre of the country. People are being warned to check the NS website before starting journeys. Hundreds of stranded travellers have spent the night on camp beds at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.

Football match cancelled The heavy snow led to Sunday’s classic football game between Amsterdam Ajax and Rotterdam’s Feyenoord being postponed.

The police and local authorities feared traffic problems around the Amsterdam ArenA stadium where the match was to have been played. Problems on the train network would have stopped many fans being able to get to the match by public transport. A number of other Dutch matches were also postponed.
