THE NETHERLANDS -- The number of foreign tourists visiting the Netherlands in the first five months of 2008 fell by four percent as compared to 2007, says Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

According to the latest figures released by the CBS, more than four million foreigners visited the Netherlands between January and the end of May; 170,000 fewer than during the same period in 2007.

There was a significant decrease in German, British and US tourists.

The CBS blamed the fall in tourists on the stagnating world economy, the relative strength of the euro against other currencies, airport and flight taxes.
