THE NETHERLANDS - The Dutch government wants to adopt a law making it illegal to insult a group on the grounds of its personal convictions.
Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin says it is important that people be able to make their opinions known in public and that they have the freedom to criticize a religion.
However, he says that using such a freedom to insult groups is going too far.
Therefore, in the future it will against the law to insult a group on the basis of its race, religion, lifestyle, sexuality or disability.
Mr Ballin said the new law is designed to ensure that people can live together peacefully.
