THE NETHERLANDS - A new problem at the Dutch Tax Department has meant incorrect assessments for what is believed to be thousands of taxpayers. Although the exact cause of the problem has not yet been determined, it's suspected that there was a computer fault during the processing of information that determines rebates for homeowners that have a mortgage.

Though exact figures are not available, it's clear that many people have received either too much or too little.

This is the latest in a series of mistakes made at the Tax Department in recent months, prompting the Dutch Audit Office and the Lower House in parliament to issue reprimands.

Those affected by the fault do not have to do anything: the tax authorities will contact them by letter within a few weeks.
