The first lapwing egg of 2009 has been found in a meadow near Eemnes in the province of Utrecht.

EEMNES - A volunteer worker from a bird protection group found the egg at 11:45 on Sunday, and the find has been confirmed by Landscape Management Foundation staff.

The first lapwing egg of 2008 was also found in the same area.

It is a Friesland tradition to give the first lapwing egg of the year to the province's royal commissioner. Originally, it was given to the sovereign.

The first lapwing egg is said to herald the spring and, nowadays, people throughout the Netherlands try to find it.
