A Dutch sniffer dog team are to travel to Japan on Monday to help with the search and rescue effort following the country's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

The team comprises four staff and four dogs, a spokesperson for Signi Sniffer Dogs said. The team is to stay in Japan for 10 days.  They will report to the Japanese authorities to see where they are to be deployed.

The team also came into action after Haiti's massive quake in January 2010 but there found mostly corpses. It is wonderful to find survivors, the spokesperson said, but finding dead people is very important too, so relatives can say goodbye to their loved ones. cl
