The Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research NWO will send five researchers to Antarctica in January 2013. Heading up a Dutch research station there, the NWO hopes to add a Dutch stamp to investigations done in the South Pole.

The station will be made up of four mobile laboratories that will be joining an existing British base. Research will focus on the effects of the rapid melting of ice sheets on sea water and the human food chain.

The Dutch station is the initiative of Education Minister Ronald Plasterk, inspired during a visit to the South Pole with Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima a few years ago.
