Police have arrested a man in connection with the rape of a 71-year-old woman in the Dutch town of Den Helder in 1994. The 47-year-old suspect was identified thanks to DNA analysis.

The man had recently been convicted and jailed for another offence. The routine collection of DNA material for this conviction enabled investigators to link him to the unsolved rape case from 16 years ago.

In the Netherlands, rapists can be prosecuted up to 20 years after the crime, so the man will now face trial for the rape.
