ROTTERDAM - Queen Beatrix attended celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of St Mary's Church in Rotterdam on Sunday.

English merchants funded the construction of the Anglican church in the early 18th century. The merchants were supported by England's Queen Anne and the Duke of Marlborough. The church flourished until Napoleon's troops invaded the Netherlands in 1795.

The original church building fell into disrepair, and was ultimately demolished in 1913. In that same year, a new Anglican church was built elsewhere in Rotterdam.
