THE NETHERLANDS - Economic Affairs Minister Maria van der Hoeven has allocated a EUR 280,000 subsidy for a trial in tidal energy.

The experiment in the Westerschelde estuary will begin in 2008. A turbine in the water will be driven by the tides. The trial will provide electricity for 100 homes.

The minister wants to see whether this form of energy could be accessed on a larger scale in the future. Researchers want to know whether the turbines can withstand salt water and storm conditions.
