THE NETHERLANDS – Learning Dutch is growing in popularity among Dutch citizens abroad.

In 2008, at least 10,000 children of Dutch emigrants in approximately 80 countries are having lessons in the Dutch language and culture. That's an increase of 50 percent since 1998.

The Foundation for Dutch Education Abroad says the increase is due, among other factors, to the continuing number of Dutch citizens who emigrate, but who nevertheless want to preserve their own language and culture.

Above all, such studies help if they want to take up further courses upon their return. Almost half of all those who emigrate decide to come back to the Netherlands within seven years.

If the Dutch find it a good idea to teach their children Dutch and about Dutch culture while abroad then why does it seem that many Dutch have a problem with other cultures and languages here in Netherlands.
