Dutch international Babel to leave Liverpool

German football club Hoffenheim look set to buy Dutch international Ryan Babel from Liverpool. The player is in Germany to reach a personal agreement with Hoffenheim. Liverpool have already agreed a transfer fee with the German club.

The 24-year-old striker left the Amsterdam club, Ajax, for Liverpool in 2007 for a fee of 11 million euros. He has not had a successful stay in England and has only once this season been named in the basic Liverpool squad.

On Monday, Babel was fined 11,000 euros by the English Football Association for unbecoming behaviour. On his Twitter site, he had shown referee Howard Webb in a Manchester United shirt – a reference to the referee’s alleged bias. A year ago, he had been fined by Liverpool for complaining about his being kept in reserve by the club – again on his Twitter site.
