Dutch go on fewer outings

Dutch consumers are going on fewer outings and are spending less on leisure activities.

The number of outings has decreased by four percent to 3.4 billion compared to 2008. Spending on leisure activities decreased even more in that period, by seven percent to nearly 44 billion euros.

These are the main results of a study published by research bureau NBTC-NIPO. The researchers write that the decline is mainly due to the economic crisis. “But the use of new media at home appears to be making a contribution to the decline.” The study specifically mentions social networking and computer games.

Popular activities outside the home include walking and cycling 25 percent. Dutch people spend an equal number of hours on sports and ‘fun shopping’ 16 percent.

About one-eighth of leisure time is spent on hobbies or clubs, slightly more than on going out 11 percent. Visits to amusement parks are in sixth place, followed by water sports, culture, events and attending sports matches.
