Albert Heijn and Etos will switch to using sustainable palm oil in their products by 2015.

THE NETHERLANDS - By 2015, Albert Heijn supermarkets and Etos pharmacies plan to switch entirely to sustainable palm oil in their products.

Sustainable palm oil is produced without cutting down forests to provide agricultural land.

Palm oil, used in cosmetics and skin care products, is often extracted by methods that call for the destruction of virgin forests. In countries such as Indonesia, such methods have led to massive deforestation and damage to the region's biodiversity.

Unilever, the Dutch-British producer of food, cleaning and personal care products, has also promised to switch to sustainable palm oil by 2015.
