Dutch industry has bought the first batch of soya certified as sustainable by the Round Table on Responsible Soy RTRS.

Brazilian soya company Grupa André Maggi is to supply 85,000 tons to animal feed association Nevedi, food retailer Ahold and dairy firm FrieslandCampina. The Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative described the move as a “breakthrough”.

Soya is one of the world’s most important agricultural products. Due to increasing meat consumption the demand for the crop as animal feed is rapidly growing.

The RTRS is a global platform which was established in 2006 with the aim of becoming the global standard for responsibly cultivated soy. The organisation aims to prevent environmental damage and violation of local land rights caused by soya cultivation.
