Dutch economy: politicians response

“It’s going better than we thought it would, not as badly as we feared, but we’ve still a long way to go,” proclaimed Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager today in parliament, handing over the financial report for 2010.

Mr de Jager referred back to the development of the Dutch economy over the past year. On Budget Day last September, the finance chief forecast a cautious recovery when he claimed: “It’s better than bad, less than good and not yet near where we want it to be.”

The minister said that statement was still the case, but a somewhat more optimistic variant was justified given the current state of the economy.
