Dutch consumers are going out for meals and drinks more often.

AMSTERDAM – Dutch consumers are going out for meals and drinks more often. In 2007 a record EUR 18.9 billion was spent on these activities.

This amount includes spending on food and drink in restaurants, canteens, and petrol station shops. Market researcher FoodService Institute of the Netherlands (FSIN) announced this on Tuesday at the Horecava fair in the Rai Amsterdam, the most important trade fair for the hospitality industry in the Netherlands.

The main reason behind the growth is that many consumers no longer eat out "for fun" but see it increasingly as an alternative for cooking at home, according to the FSIN.

The total turnover of meals and drinks in the hospitality sector rose by 6.2 percent compared to a year earlier.

34 percent of all expenditure in the Netherlands now goes to eating or drinking out.
This figure will most likely rise even further in the coming years.

In the US this percentage is 51 percent, in Great Britain 43 percent. The FSIN expects that the Dutch market will eventually have the same characteristics as the British market.

Supermarkets are increasingly catering to consumers' need for convenience food. They are offering more and more products, like ready meals, and services to compete with a part of the hospitality industry.
