Dutch donation to gene bank

The Dutch government has made a 1.75 million euro donation to the Global Crop Diversity Trust, an organisation which runs a number of top-level gene banks which store and preserve genetic material of important food crops.

The preservation of food crop diversity is important to the global improvement of plant varieties and to safeguard future food production. The top-level gene banks were created because many of the about 1.500 gene banks in the world were not built to survive natural disasters and a large number are suffering from a lack of proper maintenance.
