The measure aims to tackle illegal prostitution in hotels.

THE NETHERLANDS - The Dutch cabinet wants to introduce a licence for escort services. Speaking in the Lower House, Justice Minister Hirsch Ballin said this would help to combat illegal prostitution in such locations as hotels.

A Dutch association of leisure companies said last week that there were many illegal prostitutes working in the country's hotels.

Ballin said he was concerned about this, chiefly because it is likely that many of the prostitutes are victims of illegal people trafficking.

The minister said this was an evil that must be fought and that a licensing system would enable the government to make a range of demands on the escort services.
