Dutch bus drivers facing increased aggression

Figures from Connexxion, the largest public transport bus company in the Netherlands, reveal that on average one of its bus drivers will face abuse or intimidation every 24 hours.

THE NETHERLANDS - The number of such incidents involving Connexxion drivers increased by more than 10 percent in 2008 compared to the year before.

The company recorded over 3,300 reports of aggressive behaviour in 2008.

In more than 400 cases, a driver was abused or threatened, sometimes with firearms.

Other bus companies say Connexxion's figures reveal a trend their own drivers are witnessing.

Trials involving increased police surveillance of bus routes are due to begin soon in Den Bosch, Tilburg, Dordrecht, Almere and Gouda.
