Dutch announce Benelux Libya mission

The Netherlands, together with the other members of the Benelux bloc, Belgium and Luxembourg, plans to deploy a reconnaissance mission to Benghazi in Libya to get an idea of the humanitarian situation there.

Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal announced the move during a conference on Libya in Rome on Thursday. The Benelux mission will hold talks with Libya’s National Transitional Council in Banghazi which is a stronghold of the rebels who oppose the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

The council has been set up as the voice of the rebel movement. Although the Netherlands views the council as a legitimate partner in talks, this does not imply official Dutch recognition of it. Mr Rosenthal stressed again that the Netherlands does not recognise governments but only states.
