Dutch company Martinair, which owns the KLM group, said Thursday that it would be stopping commercial flights on its four Boeing 767 aircraft by next year, to focus on transporting freight.

"Martinair Holland NV plans to concentrate fully on its air freight activities as per the end of 2011, and to discontinue its passenger service," the company said in a statement.

"The KLM group would make every effort to keep affected employees within the KLM family," the group said, adding that about 600 of over 1,800 employees would be affected.

The company was founded in 1958 and has 11 aircraft dedicated to its freight services.
