Dutch Jews and gays face increased discrimination

Official figures show the number of reported incidents of discrimination against gays and Jews increased dramatically in the Netherlands in 2009.

The number of anti-Semitic incidents rose by almost 50 percent compared to the previous year. The number of anti-gay incidents were up nearly 13 percent. Of all reported cases of abuse and assault, more than one-third are directed against homosexuals.

Both the COC gay rights organisation and the Centre for Information and Documentation Israel say the figures are “just the tip of the iceberg”. They are demanding that measures to combat the increasing discrimination are discussed as part of the ongoing Dutch government coalition talks.
