Dutch GPs announce demonstration against cuts

The national association of family doctors has announced it will hold a demonstration on 6 October against the cabinet’s plans to cut 132 million euros from the GP care budget.

The association says the cuts amount to 20,000 euros less per practice. The GPs warn that the austerity measures will backfire in the long run. They predict that the cuts will only make primary care more expensive.

Reduced availability of GPs means patients will be forced to turn to hospitals for care, which is much more expensive. The GPs say that on balance the cuts will only cost money.
