Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen will meet Middle Eastern government ministers next week to discuss peace.

The Hague -- Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen will visit Syria, Israel and the Palestinian territories next week to discuss ways of promoting Middle East peace, his office said on Sunday.

Verhagen would visit the region from Monday to Thursday, meeting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian premier Salam Fayyad, as well as an array of government ministers.

"The conflict in the Middle East will be the main theme of the discussions," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"The Netherlands wants help promote the resumption of peace negotiations as soon as possible."

In Syria, Verhagen would also discuss cooperation in the area of water management, in which the low-lying Netherlands has decades of experience.

"Water shortages in the region can be a source of conflict," the ministry said.
