THE NETHERLANDS - Research commissioned by the government shows a substantial drop in crimes against businesses since 2004.

In 2007, the number of shoplifting cases was a third lower compared to 2004, while the number of burglaries in hotels, bars and restaurants decreased by 25 percent. The level of material damage also decreased.

Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin attributes the decrease to better policing, but also to preventative measures taken by the business community.

However, the minister said a further reduction was necessary, as the total cost of crime against businesses was still more than EUR 500 million last year.
