The drop in the Dutch crime rate is levelling off – with 1.2 million criminal offences reported in 2007 and the year before.

THE NETHERLANDS - The drop in the Dutch crime rate is levelling off.

According to the Dutch statistics office, 1.2 million criminal offences were reported in 2007, the same as in the previous year. Crime rates had been dropping since 2002. Nearly half of all crimes were committed in the country's 24 main cities.

The capital Amsterdam tops the list with 170 crimes per year per 1,000 inhabitants.

Compared with 2002, the number of thefts dropped in 2007, whereas the number traffic offences and acts of vandalism and violence increased.
