Doctors too free with sleeping pills

The Consumers' Association says family doctors are prescribing sleeping tablets too readily.

THE NETHERLANDS - Patients are being given too many pills at a time and are rarely being warned of the hazards of long-term use.

These trends are against guidelines issued by the Society of Dutch General Practitioners.

The guidelines also recommend that patients be told of the alternatives to sleeping tablets, such as relaxation exercises and sleep therapy.

Doctors are advised that no more than 10 tablets should be prescribed at a time and that patients should be seen before they are given repeat prescriptions.

The Consumers' Association says the guidelines are rarely followed.
