The public health institute predicts the number of people diagnosed with diabetes will reach 1.3 million by 2025.

The Netherlands – The number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the Netherlands is set to rise sharply to 1.3 million by 2025.

The claims, reported by De Telegraaf, are based on figures from the Dutch national institute of public health and the environment (RIVM).

In 2007, 740,000 people are currently diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It is estimated that another 250,000 people have the disease, probably without even knowing it.

The number of diabetics in the Netherlands has been increasing rapidly as more people are overweight and exercising less, said the RIVM.
