Animal rescue workers unsure what caused the crocodile's death and how it ended up on the beach in Scheveningen.

The Hague – A dead crocodile was found by beachgoers in Scheveningen on Thursday.

According to reports, police collected the dead animal and took it to an animal care centre in nearby The Hague. The animal was identified as a spectacled caiman.

It remains unclear what caused the animal's death and how it ended up on the beach.

An animal rescue worker speculated to the ANP news agency that the crocodile may have been kept privately as a pet and died unexpectedly. The owner may have dumped the body on the beach, the rescue worker suggested.

The spectacled caiman is common in Central and South America. The species is not under threat.
