The Council of Police Commissioners want much tougher punishments for drivers caught using drugs.

The Netherlands - The Council of Police Commissioners want much tougher punishments for drivers caught using drugs. They would like to see even the slightest use of drugs by drivers made a punishable offence.

Above all, they would like to see the chances of arrest improved by the introduction of a saliva test. The test determines whether or not somebody has used drugs. A subsequent blood test would determine the quantity of drugs used.

A recent trial of such a saliva test was so successful that Camiel Eurlings, Minister of Transport, would like to see it applied throughout the Netherlands.

Every year approximately 80 people, most of them young, die on Dutch roads after using drugs.
