Council of State opposes minimum sentences

The Council of State of the Netherlands, the country’s highest advisory organ, is opposed to the introduction of minimum sentences.

The council was looking at a government bill to set minimum sentences which was published on Tuesday. It would oblige the courts to impose 50 percent of the maximum legal sentence in cases where a person is found guilty of a crime carrying a maximum sentence of at least eight years less than ten years after a previous conviction.
