Compulsory gay education in Dutch schools

Dutch primary and secondary schools should be required to provide information about sexuality, including homosexuality. That was the message from the lower house Tuesday during a session with parliament.

Education Minister Marja van Bijsterveldt opposes the requirement. According to her, schools pay sufficient attention to sexuality. She would rather see educators focus on other important issues, such as obesity.

Gay rights organization, COC, however, is pleased with the proposal. President Vera Bergkamp called it a commanding signal from the government. The group had held a demonstration in The Hague prior to the vote.

In 2009, the house passed a motion to investigate the information schools provided on the subject.
