Commotion over underground CO2 storage

There is commotion in the northern province of Groningen where a former gas field has been nominated for underground CO2 storage. Around 200 local residents of Sebaldeburen in the municipality Grootegast attended a meeting organised by the government, province and research bureau TNO Delft on the plans.

Many of the local residents at the meeting voiced their concerns about the safety of storing large quantities of CO2 underground. The residents say they plan to hold demonstrations, make a television documentary and set up a platform for residents to oppose the CO2 storage.

Sebaldeburen is one of three possible locations for CO2 storage. Boerakker in the Province of Groningen and Eleveld in the Province of Drente have also been nominated. Meetings will be held in these municipalities late this week.

In November, further meetings will be organised on CO2 storage in Grootegast.
