The Netherlands - In Europe the clocks were turned back by an hour last night, heralding in wintertime. As a result the mornings are lighter and the evenings darker. In the last weekend of March, the clocks will be set forward again.

In the Netherlands environmental organisations drew attention to light pollution, as there are fewer places where it is really dark at night.

Under the title “The night of the night”, night photography and astronomy workshops were held and zoos were opened.

Lights were dimmed in hundreds of buildings, including Utrecht cathedral, the Euromast in Rotterdam and the Martini tower in Groningen in the north of the country.
