AMSTERDAM - Two in five (40 percent) of the Dutch who are familiar with more than one of the American presidential candidates hope that Hillary Clinton wins the elections.

Her main rival Barrack Obama follows with 35 percent. This emerged from a survey published on Wednesday by TNS NIPO and commissioned by RTL.

Obama's popularity has grown strongly over the past few months. 13 percent of the Dutch said in November that they preferred Obama, while Clinton had the support of 64 percent.

In general the Dutch hope that a Democrat will be elected to the White House. Three in five respondents say they'd prefer a Democratic president in the US. Just 8 percent said they'd prefer to see a Republican elected.
