Citizens employed to do police work

More and more Dutch police units use citizens to do serious police work.

According the TV-news broadcaster RTL, these citizens wear uniforms and conduct surveillance or other simple detective work.

The police say that using members of the public in this way improves the chances of catching a criminal in the act of committing a crime.

14 of the 25 police forces run projects in which citizens are allowed to work actively with police to improve safety in neighbourhoods, for instance, by enforcing traffic regulations. Impending government spending cuts may jeopardise the funding for these programmes.
