Sander Chan says he can’t accept the party’s limitations on homosexuality.

AMSTERDAM -- A member of the Amsterdam branch of the Christian Union political party is resigning because he is gay. Sander Chan says he cannot accept the code of conduct drawn up earlier in 2008 by his party's Cnossen Commission.

Critics of the code say it offers no clear answer to the question of whether practising homosexuals can represent the Christian Union, and whether they can have a long-term gay relationship.

Mr Chan says he cannot accept the limitations and lack of clarity in the commission's report. He says he wants to take an active role in fighting for the acceptance of homosexuality within the church and political life.

He intends to remain a member of the Christian Union.
