Amersfoort -- Lucky consumers were able to buy buckets of elephant dung at the Amersfoort zoo over the weekend, reports Dutch news agency ANP.

The dung was sold at EUR 5 per bucket.

“One visitor apparently has a big garden. He bought 20 buckets,” a spokesperson for the zoo told the ANP Sunday.

Elephant dung, which is practically odourless, is a good fertiliser, according to several sources.

Dung sales were part of the Amersfoort zoo's sustainability weekend, held 19-20 September with the theme ‘Groen? Doen!’ (Green? Do!).

The zoo also accepted empty ink cartridges and old mobile telephones for recycling, and offered free parking for anyone with a hybrid car, according to the zoo's website.

Proceed from the dung sales will go towards the Amersfoort zoo wildlife fund, reports de Telegraaf.
