ZEELAND - A 12-year-old German boy who got buried under sand on a beach in Groede in the Dutch province of Zeeland has died in a hospital in Belgium.

On Monday, the boy was playing in the sand, building a system of canals with a deep hole.

When he climbed down into the pit to dig out a further horizontal canal, the sand collapsed on top of him. A friend immediately ran to get help and the boy was dug out.

After being resuscitated, he was taken to a hospital in Bruges where he died on Tuesday.

This is the third incident this summer in this southern part of Zeeland, known as Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The authorities have issued a warning against digging deep holes in the sand in the vicinity, which they say is unsuitable because of its texture.
