Dutch autopsy to be carried out soon on Bosnian Croat

An autopsy will be carried out soon on a Bosnian Croat war criminal who took his own life apparently by drinking poison in front of UN judges, Dutch prosecutors said Thursday.

"The autopsy is our priority... it will be carried out very shortly," Frans Zonneveld, spokesman for the Dutch prosecution in The Hague, told AFP.

He also revealed that a "chemical product which can cause death" had been found in the container which Slobodan Praljak, 72, had tipped into his mouth during his appeals hearing at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

The unprecedented gesture came on Wednesday as Praljak angrily denied being a criminal, moments after judges rejected his appeal, upholding his 20-year jail term for atrocities committed in a breakaway Bosnian Croat statelet during the 1990s Balkans wars.

Dutch prosecutors said in a statement late Wednesday that the investigation into his death "for the time being ... will focus on assisted suicide and violation of the Medicines Act."
