Bolivia to rescue Dutch tourists

The Bolivian authorities have order the rescue of a Dutch family stranded by heavy snowfall. The authorities say the family is staying in a hotel in Laguna Verde near the Chilean border.

Governor Felix Gonzalez of the department of Potosí told the French news agency AFP: “We are investigating whether more tourists are stranded there” Supplies of food and medicines have already been sent to the region.

Defence Minister Cecilia Charon has said on national television that a rescue operation by helicopter is impossible because of the extreme weather conditions. The weather is expected to improve in the coming days, increasing the chances of a successful rescue mission.

However, temperatures of – 20 degrees Celsius have been predicted for the region on Monday. The extreme weather conditions in Potosí are affecting a total of 7,000 people.
