Black ice causes treacherous conditions

Now that the snow has largely melted across the Netherlands, there is another danger facing motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, black ice.

Earlier today, the Dutch Ministry of Public Works has introduced 50 kilometre per hour speed limits on some motorways. The limits were lifted just before midday.

The Dutch motoring association ANWB has also warned against slippery conditions throughout the country on local roads. Although much of the snow has melted and temperatures have risen, the temperature of the asphalt is still freezing.

In the east, the temperatures are expected to remain below zero. Rain is expected in the west of the country which could turn into ice on the ground. This means the slippery conditions are likely to continue.
