A type of bacteria that’s been found for years in some American hospitals, but never before in Dutch hospitals, has now been discovered in the Netherlands, according to the Dutch daily newspaper het AD.

The VRE bacteria can be harmful to people with immune system deficiencies or other serious illnesses. The bacteria is also resistant to most antibiotics.

According to het AD, at least 80 patients in five Dutch hospitals have been infected with the bacteria. The source of the infections is currently unknown. Next week, experts will meet at the Dutch National Institute for Public Health in order to determine if there is one specific source of the infections or if there are multiple variants of the bacteria.

Rotterdam’s Maasstad Hospital is one of the hospital where the bacteria has been found. As many as 12 people who visited that hospital were infected with the bacteria.
