Amsterdam zoo gorilla gives birth

A gorilla in Amsterdam’s Artis zoo has given birth to a strong, healthy infant, which has already suckled.

It is not yet clear if the gorilla, which was born on Sunday, is male or female. Nor has it been given a name. Its mother, Sindy, gave birth to her first infant, Shomari, in 2007.

Like people, gorillas learn to care for their offspring by looking at the way other females nurse, hold and groom their young.

Gorillas are an endangered species, mostly as a result of the fragmentation of their habitat due to human encroachment, the trade in so-called “bushmeat” and poaching.

Another gorilla in Artis, Binti, gave birth in May, and a third one is expected to deliver a baby in March. cl
