The city council has deployed 16 road sweepers, high-pressure water hoses and 20 garbage trucks to clean up the mess left behind by the tens of thousands of people who celebrated Queen’s Day in Amsterdam.

A council spokesperson said the operation was on schedule, and that the council hoped to have everything cleaned up by 22.00 on Sunday night. The cleaning crews launched their 24-hour operation on Saturday night.

The 380 refuse collectors taking part in the clean-up are expected to collect a total of 185 tons of garbage left behind by the Queen’s Day merrymakers, just as much as in previous years. The road sweepers dump their loads in a barge in the Singel canal.

The first barge had already been filled with 45 tons of garbage on Sunday morning. However, a strong wind blowing refuse in all directions is hampering the clean-up operation.
