The law firm of Amsterdam criminal lawyer Geert-Jan Knoops has joined the Innocence Network, a global organisation which represents prisoners who were wrongly convicted of a serious crime.

The Network’s objective is to have convictions overturned on the basis of extensive forensic research. Mr Knoops’ firm is the first Dutch firm to join the Network, which seeks to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, expertise and cases.

The Innocence Network is primarily active in the united States, but also in Australia and New Zealand. Apart from Mr Knoops’ firm, the only other European representations of the network are in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Convicts who seek to prove their innocence are represented pro bono. In 2010, 29 convicts had their sentences overturned and were cleared of all blame as a result of the network’s efforts. The 29 were serving a total sentence of 426 years.
