NIJMEGEN - A consignment of nine million illegal cigarettes intended for the Dutch market has been confiscated by police in Nijmegen in the east of the Netherlands.

They are thought to be fake brand-name cigarettes and were shipped to Belgium from China and then transported by road to the Netherlands.

Had it been successful, the scam would have cost the Dutch state about EUR 1.2 million in lost tax revenues. Five suspects have been arrested in the case. Research shows that fake brand-name cigarettes often contain very high levels of nicotine and tar.
