The Belgian authorities have seized 220 tonnes of fireworks that were improperly stored or illegally offered for sale, a spokesperson for the country’s inspection departments told Flemish newspaper on Monday.

“We have checked about 120 shops," she said. "Some of them didn’t have the necessary permit, others had too many fireworks stored in the shop, and occasionally we found unsafe fireworks." The Belgian army will destroy the fireworks.

Every year, many Dutch people cross the southern border to buy fireworks for their New Year celebrations. Fireworks regulations in the Netherlands are much stricter than in Belgium, where bangers, crackers and rockets are sold all year round. In the Netherlands, the selling of fireworks is only allowed during a few days prior to New Year’s Eve.
